Co-Chairpersons, Terri Pendleton and David Broadaway, announced on April 1, 2008 the first annual Gerald T. Parks Memorial Foundation 5K Run / Walk in the down town area of Fort Mill, S.C. was a successful inaugural event.
The foundation was granted 501(c) (3) status from the IRS on June 28, 2007. The Foundation was created in May 2007 in memory of Mrs. Pendleton and Mr. Broadaway's father, Gerald T. Parks, retired Chief Petty Officer, who passed away in February 2006 from lung cancer. The organization?s mission is to raise funds for the repair and development of military healthcare facilities, as well as other needs, such as transportation for veteran's to and from needed hospital visits.
"We were very pleased to have 150+ eager participants, including Ruth Mustard, Dorn VA Hospital Director Patient Care / Nursing Services on March 15, 2008 and certainly feel for a first annual event, it was a successful one" stated Mrs. Pendleton.
"The 5K Run / Walk raised $10,000.00 in addition to the $11,000.00 we raised in November at our First Annual Golf Tournament" added Mr. Broadaway.
"A check for $21,000.00 is being sent to the Dorn VA Medial Hospital in Columbia, SC to aid in the renovating of their nursing home facility to make it a more home like environment, so our Veteran's feel like moving into the facility is only a change of address, not a loss in quality of life", added Mrs. Pendleton.
"We are very excited about being able to make this donation and we thank all those who made it possible," added Mr. Broadaway.
The Foundation is planning to hold their 2nd Annual Golf Tournament this fall.
100% of the proceeds will go into the fund as there are no salaries ? all work for the foundation is voluntary.
